What it involves
Chondroplasty or tracheal shave reduces the prominence of the thyroid cartilage — the Adam's apple — one of the features that most often causes discomfort because of its visibility. It is a short, outpatient procedure with an immediate, permanent result.
The incision, about 2-3 centimetres, is hidden in a natural crease under the chin, away from the reduced area, so the scar is practically invisible once mature.
How is a tracheal shave performed?
It is a delicate surgery because the thyroid cartilage protects the vocal cords: the key is to remove as much volume as possible without compromising their attachment.
